An adventure tour in 4x4 vehicles. It takes us from La Paz to the Uyuni Salt Flat and then to the Sajama National Park to climb a mountain of 6000 meters. Acotango volcano 6,052m/19,856ft It is not necessary to have previous experiences in mountains of 6000 meters. This trip is recommended for those who want to discover hidden Bolivia, experiencing all the emotions of climbing a 6000 meters peak in the Andes and with the maximum possible comfort. There are no nights in tents or strenuous climbing days.

The journey begins in the bustling city of La Paz, where we meet you at the airport and take you to the hotel of your choice.

The next day we cross the Bolivian plateau, with typical landscapes of the high altitude steppe and groups of llamas and alpacas peacefully grazing on the mountain slopes.

Then, we arrive at Uyuni Salt Flat area, to which we will dedicate 3 full days to discover its best-kept secrets.

As acclimatization, we will hike from the Quechua village of Tagua to the Tunupa volcano viewpoint, reaching up to 5080 meters and with incredible views of the Uyuni and Coipasa salt flats.

Afterwards, we will cross the plateau again to reach the Sajama National Park. And from here, we will climb the Acotango volcano with its 6,052m/19,856ft high.

Finally, we will return to La Paz, following the international route that connects Arica (Chile) with La Paz (Bolivia)

Difficulty: Moderate

Adventure overland trip, with hikes and climbs. The Acotango Volcano is technically easy, it takes three hours to get to the summit and other two to get back to the vehicles. A good physical shape is a must, but no need of precedent experience in similar mountains.

Day by day Intinerary

Day 1: ARRIVE TO LA PAZ, BOLIVIA

You will be met at the El Alto airport and then transferred by private transportation to your hotel in La Paz.

Day 2: LA PAZ – JIRIRA, UYUNI SALT FLAT

Departure from the hotel at 8 am. Today we travel the Bolivian plateau, with its distinctive landscapes, flora and fauna. We will stop from time to time in local villages. In all, it takes 7 hours to travel to Jirira, a very small town with a Quechua population located on the banks of the Salar de Uyuni and on the slopes of the Tunupa volcano.

Day 3: UYUNI SALT FLAT

Day to discover the Salar of Uyuni. We will visit the salt mine and the village of Colchani, where the locals process the salt in their homes. We will discover Incahuasi Island and take a walk to the top of Pescado Island. We will see the sunset in the salt flat before returning to Jirira to our lodging.

Day 4: UYUNI SALT FLAT

One more day to discover the many secrets of this huge expanse of salt. We visit “los ojos del salar” and the cristals, then the Coquesa mummies. Depending on the time of the year and the conditions, we may also visit the Galaxies (caves of petrified algae) and see the nesting of flamingos. After dinner we will return again to the salt flat for an amazing stargazing.

Day 5: JIRIRA – TUNUPA VOLCANO HIKE - JIRIRA

Breakfast at 6 am and departure at 7 am. Short transfer with our off-road vehicle to the Quechua village of Tagua. From here we will begin our ascent of the Tunupa volcano. A simple walk that allows us to acclimate for the climb of Acotango, our 6000m peak. The highest altitude we will reach today is 5080 meters above sea level. This day also gives us beautiful views of the Coipasa and Uyuni salt flats. Return to our hotel in Jirira.

Day 6: JIRIRA - SAJAMA NATIONAL PARK

Departure from our hotel at around 9 am Once again we will cross the Bolivian plateau, with the typical high-altitude steppe landscapes and herds of llamas and alpacas grazing freely. After 6 hours of traveling, we arrive in Sajama National Park and to our lodging, a modest local hotel. Our hosts, Ana Maria and Mario, await us with a typical local dinner, based on quinoa and llama meat.

Day 7: SAJAMA VILLAGE - ACOTANGO CLIMB 6,052m/19,856ft - SAJAMA VILLAGE

The day begins with an hour-long transfer by 4WD, to reach an altitude of 5400 meters at the foohill of the Acotango volcano. The climb is a walk without technical difficulty. The first part proceeds along a path on volcanic soil and then continues on a glacier that could be covered with penitents but without crevasses. Within 3 to 4 hours we will have reached the summit. The return to the car waiting for us where we left it takes another 2 hours. At about 4 in the afternoon we will be back in our accommodation

Day 8: RESERVE DAY

In case of bad weather or if the participants wish to have a rest day before attacking the Acotango peak. You can visit the thermal baths located near the village of Sajama. Or even the Macaya lagoon and the chulpas with rock paintings.

Day 9: SAJAMA NATIONAL PARK - LA PAZ

Today we drive back to the city of La Paz. The journey continues taking the international road that arrives from Chile and takes us to La Paz, in 5 hours of travel on an asphalt road. You will arrive in La Paz in time to  visit the craft markets and the sorcerers' market on our own.
