The Deserts of the Andes are one of our planet’s masterpieces; from Atacama to South Lipez, from Laguna Colorada to Uyuni salt flat, this expedition is an invitation to a multicolored mineral world and untouched nature.

Each day will surprise us with new and amazing landscapes: six thousand meters volcanoes, red, blue and green lakes and lagoons, salt ranges, thermal springs and ancient Indian villages. A close contact with the surprising flora and fauna is guaranteed, since we will spend many days walking in this incredible nature. Discovering people is one of this trip’s highlights: Quechua as well as Aymara families still live in the region with their ancient traditions and cultures.

Difficulty

This overland expedition doesn’t involve hikes or climbs. Nevertheless, some tours in San Pedro de Atacama surroundings go over 4.000m / 13.123ft. and the journey in Bolivia spends one night in a hut at 4.200m 13,779ft. Accommodations in San Pedro are quite comfortable and in Bolivia are basic hotels and refuges. Temperature drop below 0 Celsius due to the high altitude.

Season: Year round, with more risk of rain in January and February.

Duration: 11 days. Starting and ending in Santiago De Chile.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Santiago De Chile

Arrive at Santiago airport and private transfer to your hotel.
You can choose to spend the day exploring Santiago on your own or take our guided bike tour (5 hours) or our guided walking tour (3,5 hours).

Day 2: Santiago – Calama – San Pedro De Atacama

Private transfer to Santiago airport. Flight to Calama, in the heart of the Atacama Desert, from where we drive across the most arid part of the desert to the oasis San Pedro de Atacama. (shared transfer) In the afternoon, tour to the Death Valley and Moon Valley for an unforgettable sunset.

Day 3: San Pedro De Atacama – Rainbow Valley – Astronomical Tour

Departure 08:30 in the morning to start our journey to Hierbas Buenas, where we discover the petroglyphs, some even date back to 6000 years ago. The journey continues to explore the Valley of the Rainbow, located in the Domeyko mountain range and where it is possible to admire the hills with stripes of colors. We will be back to San Pedro around 13:00.

In the evening, guided astronomical observations at SpaceObs San Pedro de Atacama at the Space Observatory (availability to be confirmed according to the moon phases).

Day 4: San Pedro - El Tatio Geysers – San Pedro

Very early in the morning, we drive to the Tatio Geysers so we can enjoy the best moment of the day, at sunrise, when the steam is higher than ever. We have breakfast at the foot of the Tocorpuri volcanoes and then drive to Machuca village, where we stop to explore the town and the nearby wetlands, with its local fauna: lama, flamingoes, vicuñas and wild geese, among other. We will be back to San Pedro around 13:00.

Day 5: Atacama Salt Flat - Toconao – Chaxa Lagoon – Miscanti & Miniques Lagoon – Piedras Rojas

Today we enjoy a full day of traveling across the desert and the Altiplano. We drive south to the Aymará village of Toconao with its local cacti and stone handicrafts. Afterward, we enter the Atacama salt flat and discover at the Chaxa Lagoon, one of the world's best places to see flamingos nesting. From there, we start driving up towards the Altiplano, where we experience a complete landscape change. Our target destination is the protected Miscanti area, which lies to the east of the atacama salt flat, a region marked by mountain lagoons, volcanoes, and vibrant local flora and fauna. In the evening we drive back to San Pedro. We will be back to San Pedro around 18:00.

Day 6: San Pedro de Atacama – Laguna Verde – Laguna Colorada

We drive to Hito Cajon and cross the border to Bolivia. Our first destination today is Laguna Verde at the foot of the volcanoes Licancabur and Juriques. The 4WD keeps moving towards the northeast, passing by “Sol de la Manana” geyser, at 4,900m. Later on, we reach Laguna Colorada with its flamingoes, vicuñas, and the characteristic white blocks of boron, which contrast harshly with the red water of the lake.

Day 7: Laguna Colorada – San Juan

In the morning, we drive north through the Avaroa National Park past several magnificent multicolored lagoons. Another overland day of amazing changing landscapes that finishes in the village of San Juan which offers us the comfort of a small hotel.

Day 8: San Juan – Uyuni Salt Flat – Uyuni Town

Now we are out of the Avaroa National Park. We have left South Lipez behind us as we are just entering the Uyuni area, which is famous for its vast salts flats, the biggest in the world: Salar de Uyuni (or Tunupa ), 12,000 square km, and Salar de Coipasa, 4,500 square km. The two salt lakes are separated only by a narrow range and by the red volcano Tunupa. We cross the Uyuni Salt Flat and drive to Uyuni town.

Day 9: Uyuni Town – Colchane - Iquique

We drive west along the Coipasa salt flat to the Chilean border and cross over to the Chilean side of the high plateaus. We arrive at the village of Colchane and then head to Iquique, a vibrant city by the Pacific Ocean, where we spend the night.

Day 10: Iquique – Santiago

Day at leisure to discover downtown, walk along the waterfront, enjoy the beach. Shared transfer to the airport and flight to Santiago.
