The climb of the second highest volcano in the world: Pissis Volcano (6,795m/22,294ft). This is an overland/mountaineering tour supported by 4x4 vehicles and leaded by expert guides. It takes us from Copiapo (Chile) to Fiambala (Argentina) across the San Francisco pass. As part of the acclimatizing process, we will climb the San Francisco volcano (6.018m/19744ft) in one day from Laguna Verde Base Camp. The climb of the Pissis volcano instead requires two high camps before reaching the summit.

The journey begins when we meet you at the Copiapo airport or at your hotel in Bahia Inglesa or Caldera. You will meet your guide(s), check your equipment, and make sure you have everything you need for this adventure. 

Then we move higher, driving to Valle Chico, to start with our acclimatizing process. Over the following days, the journey goes through typical landscapes of the high-altitude steppe. You will see vicunas groups peacefully grazing on the mountain slopes. We build up strong acclimatization with easy hikes and climbs.

Then, we set a camp at Laguna Verde, from where we climb the San Francisco volcano after an exciting off-road drive.In the next stage of the expedition, we cross to Argentina and drive to Fiambala, where we get ready to climb the Pissis volcano. 

We will drive off-road with our 4x4 vehicles to reach the volcano base and our base camp. From there we will climb the mountain with two high camps, in 5 days.  

Finally, we will descend to Fiambala and, later on, directly to the Pacific Ocean. In one driving day, we arrive at Bahia Inglesa/ Caldera, where we will spend the night before taking the flight back to Santiago de Chile.

Difficulty: High

Adventure/mountaineering/overland trip, with camps, hikes, and strenuous climbs. The two 6000 summits proposed for this expedition are technically accessible. Still, the altitude, the cold, and the wind can make this ascent strenuous. A good physical shape is a must, and you will need previous experience in similar mountains. There are two high camps for the climb of the Pissis volcano. On the days of the ascent to the high camps and back, you will need to bring a big backpack, sharing with the guides loads of tents, fuel, and food. Please keep in mind that it is possible to hire a porter for that part of the expedition. Otherwise, all along the expedition, for all hikes and climbs, you will be carrying only your small daypack with some warm clothes, water, and your box lunch.

  • Private transportation in 4x4 vehicle suitable for off-road use throughout the expedition. The vehicles are permanently available to transport people and equipment (1 car for 1 & 2 guests/ 2 cars for 3 to 6 guests)

  • Expert mountain guide Spanish & English: 1 guide for groups of 1 and 2 people, 2 guides for groups from 3 to 6 people.

  • One assistant guide for the small groups of 1 and 2 people.

  • Meals as mentioned in the itinerary: full board while camping, half board on day 1 and 16, only breakfast on day 17. In all 16 breakfast,16 lunches and 13 dinner.

  • Accommodation as mentioned in the itinerary: 4 nights in Hotel*** in Fiambala and Caldera (or Bahia Inglesa) and 12 nights in camp. Double room / tent accommodation.

  • Food: We carefully select the food we bring and prepare fresh meals every day.  We take into account the special mountain conditions and energy requirements to plan for an appropriate menu. Our guests are welcomed to inform their preferences and food restrictions at the moment of the booking. Drinking water and hot drinks are always available.

  • Fully equipped camp (expedition tents, kitchen tent, dining tent,mats, etc.). The dining tent is equipped with tables and chairs. High-quality dormitory expedition tents. Spacious triple tents are used for two people, and double tents are used for one person. High-density foam mats ensure a high level of sleeping comfort until base camp. For the high camps (2 nights), you will need your own Thermarest.

  • Private airport transfers as mentioned in the program.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: ARRIVE TO COPIAPO AIRPORT, CHILE – DRIVE TO VALLE CHICO

You will be met at the Copiapo airport, meet your guides, make sure nothing is missing and then depart to Valle Chico, our first camp in the heart of the Atacama Desert.

Day 2: VALLE CHICO – LAGUNA SANTA ROSA

Transfer by 4x4 to Laguna Santa Rosa (4.500m/14.763ft). Time for an easy acclimatizing hike in the afternoon.

Day 3: LAGUNA SANTA ROSA – CERRO SIETE HERMANOS (4900m) – LAGUNA SANTA ROSA

Full day acclimatizing climb. The climbing to the summit will take 5 to 7 hours round trip and allow for an amazing view of the surroundings. Back to the base camp.

Day 4: LAGUNA SANTA ROSA – LAGUNA VERDE

Today we will drive along Maricunga salt flat, check in the Maricunga customs for our Ojos del Salado climb, and then keep going across the high plateaus to reach Laguna Verde. We set up a base camp nearby the lake, at the hot springs site.

Day 6: LAGUNA VERDE - SUMMIT VN. SAN FRANCISCO (6.018m/19.744ft) - LAGUNA VERDE

Starting off very early in the morning, we approach the mountain with the 4x4 (4.800m/15.748ft). It is a full day climbing this beautiful mountain located at the very border between Chile and Argentina. The summit is at 6.018m/19.744ft and we will need around 6 to 8 hours to reach the top. Back to our camp.

Day 7: LAGUNA VERDE – FIAMBALA

We drive with our 4x4 vehicles to Argentina, following the international road CH31 and passing by Paso San Francisco, at 4726m/15,505ft. At the end of the day we arrive to Fiambala, a small Argentinean town, where we spend the night in a hotel.

Day 8: FIAMBALA - PISSIS BASE CAMP

Drive to Pissis base camp. At arrival we set up our camp and get ready to start the climb the next day.

Day 9: PISSIS BASE CAMP - HIGH CAMP – PISSIS BASE CAMP

Today we go for an acclimatizing hike to the high camp, located at 5200m/17,060ft. We will bring some food, fuel and tents, then hike back to the base camp.

Day 10: PISSIS BASE CAMP - HIGH CAMP

Today we climb to the high camp again and stay for the night.
