The Lake Titicaca & Sun Island tour in Bolivia takes us through the legends of Andean culture. Exploring Tiwanaku, Copacabana, Sun Island, and the Mon Island is a trip back in time. First, we visit the ancient ruins of Tiwanaku, believed to be the birthplace of Andean culture. A four-square kilometer including monumental structures; the Gate of the Sun, the Kalasasaya, and the Semi-Subterranean Temple.

Afterward, we drive to Copacabana. Here, we visit the old cathedral and the mythical Lake Titicaca, where early inhabitants believed the sun was born. The Incas saw it as their civilization's birthplace. We have time in the quaint little village of Copacabana nestled between 2 hills on the lake's edge.

Next, we navigate Lake Titicaca to explore Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna, a place steeped in legend and several Inca ruins. We climb the steps of the "Escalera del Inka." We discover the local way of life in the islands, visit Pilkocaina, Yumani, Challapampa, and just mention a few of the fantastic spots that make this trip unique.

This tour is also an opportunity to acclimatize to the high altitude before undertaking a multi-day trek or climb. As a matter of fact, we will be all the time over 3500m/11.480ft. The easy hikes, short walks and spending several nights at this altitude enable our body to gentle adapt to the thin air. It gets us ready to go for more. Not to mention that we will be admiring the Cordillera Real every day.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: LA PAZ (3600m) - TIWANAKU (4200m) - COPACABANA (3830m)

We leave La Paz early in the morning and drive through the Altiplano (4000m), passing the Cordillera Real on our right. This area is arid, but we will see the local shepherds herding their llamas. We will visit the impressive Tiwanaku archaeological site. The birthplace of Andean culture. Later on, we drive onto Copacabana. At Tiquina, we need to cross a short stretch of the lake by barge with the vehicle. From Tiqunia, we have a drive to Copacabana. Once there, we have time to visit the old Cathedral from the 16th century and other village sites.. 5 to 6-hour drive and Short easy walks during the day

Day 2: COPACABANA - CHALLAPAMPA, ISLA DEL SOL (3820m) - YUMANI (3950m)

In the morning, we take the boat from Copacabana to Challapampa (Isla del Sol). Challapampa lies on the northern end of the island. From here, we start our hike; first, we visit the Inca ruins of Chincana. Then we head to the southern end of the island to the village of Yumani. Along the way we have great views of the lake, mountains from the Cordillera Real and in the far north we can see the Apolobamba mountain range. Later in the afternoon, we arrive at the hotel La Estancia where we have a fantastic sunset over the mountains. 1,5 hours by boat and 3 to 4-hour trek.

Day 3: ISLA DEL SOL - ISLA DE LA LUNA - COPACABANA - LA PAZ

First thing in the morning, we will visit Escalera del Inca and Pilko Kaina. From here, we take the boat to Isla de La Luna. We have time to see some of the ruins on the island. We then head back to Copacabana for some lunch before we head back to La Paz. Leaving Copacabana, we have our last views of the lake, and we will drive back to Tiquina, where we again cross the lake and move on to La Paz. Drop off at Hotel. One hour by boat, some small walks and 3 - 4 hours drive
